Advantages of EDM Machining and machining accuracy

January 24, 2024
Electrical Discharge Machining(EDM)is an important process method in mold manufacturing, especially more important in the manufacturing of injection molds.
As EDM Machining directly utilizes electrical and thermal energy to remove metal materials, with little relationship between the strength and hardness of the workpiece material, etc., so you can use soft tool electrodes to process hard workpieces.
EDM Machining works on a wide range of materials: any electrically conductive material can be machined, regardless of its toughness, hardness and microstructure. Material removal by EDM is slower compared to conventional machine tools, so the EDM process is best suited for machining hardened tool steel, titanium, carbide, tungsten carbide, inconel, etc., which are difficult to machine by conventional methods.

What are the advantages of EDM Machining?

1. Suitable for machining hard materials: extremely hard conductive materials that cannot be processed by traditional methods can be processed.
2. No deformation of the workpiece: there is no physical contact between the tool and the workpiece, so there is no cutting force on the workpiece and no deformation of the workpiece.
3. Complex contours can be machined: Precise contours can be reproduced on the surface of the workpiece by the molding EDM method.
4. High machining accuracy: excellent surface finish, precision tolerance, etc. can be obtained.
5. Machining without leaving marks: It does not leave any burrs or knife marks on the surface of the workpiece.

How much can the precision of EDM machining be?

Processing precision is high, such as Wire cutting can reach ± 2.5um processing accuracy, roughness can also reach 0.15-0.2uRa.
For EDM molding, the machining accuracy can be ±0.05mm to ±0.004mm, and the CNC surface finish can be 0.29µRa, and even 0.8µRa for small machines.
